Shirley Manson has joined the cast of the Fox TV Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. She will appear in the second series as Catherine Weaver. Catherine is an important character, the CEO of Cyberdyne, a cutting edge hi-tech company making robots that are taking over the world. Weaver is going to be an 'unusually earthy' woman in her late 30's-early 40's. Right on the money!

The show is an offshoot of the very successful movies written and directed by James Cameron, The Terminator (1984) & Terminator 2 : Judgement Day (1991), starring Arnold Schwarzenegger & Linda Hamilton.

A third Terminator movie Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003) was not so successful.

The TV spin-off has been successful. The Hollywood Reporter says that the first series of The Sarah Connor Chronicles was the highest-rated new scripted series of the 2007-2008 season.

It is thought that the second series is being filmed now and this is the first photo of Shirley in her new role (top left).

Is she human or a cyborg?

Garbage singer Shirley Manson says her acting debut was more nerve-wracking than performing for a big crowd.

The 41-year-old stars in a US telly spin-off of the sci-fi Terminator films as a woman whose company makes robots taking over the world.

Manson, who grew up in Edinburgh, said: "I was a little nervous first day on set - I've performed in front of thousands but this time the attention was on me alone.

"I've been a musician for 20 years and it was very different appearing just as Shirley Manson, with nothing to hide behind."

How did Garbage frontwoman Shirley Manson come to be a part of the show? Well, according to Friedman, "Shirley and [my wife] Christine are actually old friends, so it's kind of cheating. I would tell Christine, 'Oh, you're having lunch with Shirley, tell her I want her on the show.' We had no idea what to do with her. We just thought it'd be fun to have her. Then this year, I had written this part and I thought, let's see if she can come in and do it. But it's a pretty big part, so Shirley—like anybody else—had to go through the whole audition process."

Garbage bandmate Butch Vig sent Shirlley a quick e-mail on her screen debut that read: "Fcking awesome, I love it, queenie!"
