So Angel, so Gothic, so Angelfish. Another (more likely the same) broken relationship turned ugly. The guy in the song has behaved very badly, and this lady is full of righteous loathing to say the least.
I think this song is about marriage gone wrong and hate and hurt that can explode into violence and cruelty. It is also about how base the negative side of people can become in unhappy situations, and says that it is better to leave than stay and put up with it.

As Heaven Is Wide is against religion of any kind.
A self righteous religious fanatic can cause a lot of pain. How can anyone live up to religious ideals? We're all fallen angels. I think Shirley and Garbage are saying turn away from God and fly away, escape and be yourself.
